On the original version on tape, Side A contained all 8 songs, with Side B being left intentionally blank. Printed on Side B was the explanation, "Home taping is killing record industry profits! Father's Day is on the Way

"Father's Day" is coming up in a few days time, and I am looking forward to a nice present from my young son A.J. Anything will do, even a cordless hammer !

I will be showing my current group of students the following classic Father's Day video at the end of the week, just to let them know what all good fathers should be doing for their children.

(Unfortunately the video is extremely slow to load in, so please be patient).

Flash Frame by Frame Animation

Wouldn't it be great to see the next few frames for the above action event.
Who actually ends up in the water ?

The following Frame by Frame Animations were done in Flash CS3 using images from the web. I made a couple of them, but mostly they were made by my students.

This blog post may take a few minutes to complete loading in.

Some of the animations have small glitches where the background jumps out of position during the movie. I should have told the students to check the x and y coordinate values of the background image on every frame of their animation. As long as these x and y coordinates remain constant, the background should not move.

Learn Blues Guitar Online Here

The magnificent Jimi Hendrix, a bit before my time, but undoubtedly one of the best guitarists to ever lay down blues derived music on an electric guitar.

Okay, so this blog post is not directly ICT related; however it does review some excellent learning material that is available on the internet for guitarists.

So if you don’t like Guitar, then perhaps totally skip reading this post.

The sample videos shown here, are all by a guy called “Marty”, who is a great practitioner and teacher of blues guitar. He even looks a bit like he is Billy Joel’s younger brother !

Part of the purpose of making these You Tube videos seems to be to advertise what is available at the “Next Level Guitar” website. (More on that a bit later on).

Here is an 8 minute video that explains how Jimi Hendrix added inversions of common chords to his guitar playing to create a new and distinctive style of guitar songs.



The next video is really good for beginner guitarists, as it shows very clearly blue improvisation methods on the guitar. Marty takes things nice and slow so we can all easily understand what is going on.




The following is an 11 minute video all about how to play BB King style. Marty shows how to mix in major scales to create the classic signature "sweet" sound of the legendary BB King.



There are a few more videos on You Tube by Marty, but as his final one for this post, here is a 10 minute video about Blues Acoustic Guitar that shows some great forms of the A7 chord all the way up past the 12th fret.





The “Next Level Guitar” website is a comprehensive online learning resource for guitarists. It is a bit like a “Lynda.com” of guitar lessons. (Lynda.com provide a comprehensive range of computer software tutorials for Microsoft, Adobe, and many other applications).

On the top of page Index tab, we can click on “Free Videos”, and there are around 40 videos that can be viewed. Some of these videos, are merely previews of parts of DVD’s that they have available for sale elsewhere on their website. These DVD’s look to be quite good. Typically they cover just one classic guitar song like Hendrix’s “Hey Joe” or Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water”. The DVD then spends two hours showing every single part of the song, and how to play it. These DVD's seem to retail for around $25 US each, which is not a bad price, considering it is going to be at least a full day’s entertainment working through the DVD learning the song.

Note that while viewing the free videos: If we double click on any video while it is playing we get taken to Metacafe, and can see and find even more videos that we can watch about playing guitar that have been made by the folks at “Next Level Guitar”.

You can also become a premium member of their website for less than $30 US per month. This membership obtain access to a range of beginner, intermediate and advanced guitar playing courses. These courses have their videos for viewing online, and include downloadable resources, such as music backing tracks.

I am thinking on perhaps trying out the online membership for a month later on this year. If I do, rest assured I will do a comprehensive blog post review about it.

The B side was a non-LP track that was added when the album was re-released on CD. The single reached the #5 spot on the U.K. singles chart. The Sheffield, England new wave band disbanded in 1992 but has done some touring in recent years. They are on tour this year.

The Lambrettas - Decent Town

On this date in 1981, The Lambrettas released their first 12 inch EP (after six 7-inch singles), Decent Town. It contained the title track as well as "Total Strangers" and live versions of "Da-a-a-ance" and "Young Girls". The title track appeared on their second album, Ambience as did "Total Strangers". The studio version of "Da-a-a-nce" was on their debut album, Beat Boys In The Jet Age. "Young Girls" did not appear on either. The Brighton, England mod band named themselves after a motorbike popular with the mod revivalists. The Lambrettas released nine singles and two albums before disbanding in 1982.

Heaven 17 - Play To Win

On this date in 1981, Heaven 17 released their fourth single, "Play To Win". The B side was "Play". The A side appeared on their debut album, Penthouse And Pavement. The B side did not. The single reached the #46 spot on the U.K. singles chart. The Sheffield, England new wave band formed when Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh split from The Human League. They recruited Glenn Gregory for vocals and the band was born. The band has recorded and performed sporadically since 1988.

On this date in 1980, XTC released their ninth single, "Generals And Majors". It was offered as a double seven inch package. The other three tracks were "Don't Lose Your Temper", "Smokeless Zone" and "Somnambulist". The A side was on their fourth album, Black Sea. The other three tracks were non-LP tracks that were added as bonus tracks to the album when it was re-released on CD. The single reached the #32 spot on the U.K. singles chart. The Swindon, England post punk/new wave band called it quits in 2006 when Colin Moulding expressed a desire to call it quits. Andy Partridge didn't feel that it would be XTC without the both of them.

Buzzcocks - Are Everything

On this date in 1980, Buzzcocks released their eleventh single, "Are Everything". It was backed by "Why She's A Girl From The Chainstore". Neither of the tracks appeared on an album but both were added as bonus tracks to their third album, A Different Kind Of Tension, when it was re-released on CD, as well as on an expanded edition of Singles Going Steady. The single reached the #61 spot on the U.K. singles chart. The Manchester, England punk band disbanded in 1981 but reunited in 1989 for a reunion tour. Shortly thereafter, Shelley and Diggle regrouped to start the Buzzcocks again with new band members and they continue to play today.

On this date in 1982, Stiff Little Fingers released their eleventh single, "Bits Of Kids". It was backed by "Stands To Reason". Both tracks appeared on their fourth studio album, Now Then... The Belfast, Northern Ireland punk band broke up in 1982 after four studio albums, one live album and numerous singles. They re-formed in 1987. Jake Burns and Ali McMordie, from their original lineup, are still there. They occasionally release new material but have maintained an ambitious performance schedule.

Making Adjustments for Guitarists

So what is this blog post all about ? After all, electric guitars were around well before personal computers. So what has all this got to do with ICT ?

Well the point I am trying to make here, is that no matter what your passion,
or whatever the task you need to perform, then You Tube probably has the answers.

So for anyone out there who loves the Fender Stratocaster style of guitar; here are some useful ways to ensure your guitar is setup for optimal playing performance.


String Height (“Action”) Adjustment:




Stratocaster "Truss Rod" Adjustment:

On a Strat, it is a solid bar that goes through the whole neck. It controls the arc that the neck has. Often necks have a little bit of curvature along them.




Setting the Intonation (12th fret tuning):

Flashing Your Message Out There

The above flashing message was made by using some basic frame by frame animation in Flash.

A good message to make is to simply make your own name flashing.
Or perhaps you might get a picture of your favourite sports team, exotic car, music group, or celebrity, and add a flashing message over the top of the image.

If we change the colour of the text in each frame, then we can get rapid bursts of colour as the message unrolls across the screen. This creates a bright rapid flashing light effect: like those bogus "You're today's Winner" advertisements, that are often found on commercial internet web sites.

Students love writing their name in flashing letters like this, although I must admit that I find all of it a bit too bright and demanding on the eyes.
(Must be a GenX versus GenY thing I guess).

If a student doesn't want to make the flashing colours part of the animation, then do not force them to do it. They can make uni-colour rolling text, and that would be fine for practicing frame by frame animation.

Wayne County and The Electric Chairs - Storm The Gates Of Heaven

On this date in 1978, Wayne County and The Electric Chairs released their third album, Storm The Gates Of Heaven. It contained the singles, "Trying To Get On The Radio". The New York City punk band was fronted by Georgian born transsexual, Wayne County, and began life as simply The Electric Chairs. The Revillos - She's Fallen In Love With A Monster Man

On this date in 1981, The Revillos released their fifth single, "She's Fallen In Love With A Monster Man". It was backed by "Mind Bending Cutie Doll". Neither track appeared on an album. The Edinburgh, Scotland punk/new wave band were once The Rezillos, but when they broke up, they had to alter their name since both departing and remaining members owned rights to the name. Eugene Reynolds and Faye Fife re-formed under the name The Revillos. Jo Callis and Simon Templar formed Shake. Not long afterwards, Jo Callis would join The Human League. The Rezillos have re-formed since.

Bad Religion

On this date in 1980, Bad Religion released their self-titled debut EP. It contained the tracks, "Bad Religion", "Politics", "Sensory Overload", "Slaves", "Drastic Actions" and "World War III". None of the tracks were included on their debut album, How Could Hell Be Any Worse?, though all six tracks were added as bonuses when the album was re-released on CD. The Los Angeles punk band still records and performs. Greg Hetson (Circle Jerks) and Brian Baker (ex-Minor Threat) are in the current lineup. In fact, Greg Hetson is still a part of Circle Jerks too.

Patrik Fitzgerald - Tonight EP

On this date in 1980, Patrik Fitzgerald released his second 12 inch EP, Tonight. It contained the songs, "Tonight", "Mrs. And Mrs.", "Animal Mentality", "A Superbeing" and "Waiting For The Final Cue". None of the tracks were released as singles nor did any appear on a regular album. Patrik Fitzgerald, who once auditioned to be in London SS (the pre-Clash band that featured future Clash members, Mick Jones and Terry Chimes, future Damned guitarist Brian James and future Chelsea, Generation X and Sigue Sigue Sputnik member Tony James) was a London punk poet whose poetry was usually accompanied by his acoustic guitar. He enlisted musicians to assist as necessary.

The Satellites - Urbane Gorilla

On this date in 1980, The Satellites released their debut single, "Urbane Gorilla". It was backed by "High Rise Hillbillys". Neither track appeared on an album. The London punk band released four singles and one album by 1984. That was the end of their recordings.
